How often are lessons and how long?
Lessons are weekly (except the 5th week). We meet year round with periodic breaks for holidays.
- Private lessons: 30 minutes
- Shared lessons (2 students): 30 minutes
- Group lessons (3-4 students): 40 minute
What are shared lessons and why do you offer these over private lessons?
Shared lessons have between 2 and 4 students learning together.
Here are the benefits of shared lessons
* Traditionally, piano lessons are a very solitary experience – students come to lessons on their own, and then go home and practice on their own. Yet music is to be shared. The shared lessons allow for and encourage this.
* Students get comfortable playing in front of others, even when they don’t have a song down perfectly, or something is still in the process of being learned.
* Most things we learn to do in life, we learn with others.
* Shared lessons allow for multi-faceted learning. Not only does the student learn from the teacher through auditory, visual, and tactual instruction, but from observation of other students as well.
* Private lessons can be a little intimidating – the student has to come up with all the answers on their own for the whole lesson – this means they can be nervous for the whole lesson. In the case of shared lessons, the students get a chance to sit back and observe, allowing them to be in a relaxed state and just take in what they are watching. The students take turns at being the volunteer at the piano. The students are not nervous when they are observing.
* Shared lessons are very dynamic, interactive and fun. There is an energy present in the room when students work together!
Simply Music uses a multi-sensory learning approach, meaning that we use a variety of techniques that appeal to all learning styles. One of the most important of these is observatory learning. This occurs when students are able to process information while watching and interacting with other students. In shared lessons we do a variety of activities that just aren’t possible in a private lesson environment including mentor groups, peer-to-peer teaching and ensemble playing. A shared lesson is more fun and more energetic than a private lesson. And often students progress through the program faster in a group environment than they do on their own. Traditionally, piano lessons have been a solitary experience, but because Simply Music utilizes a more natural learning process, group lessons actually increase the success of the method.
How should I decide whether to enroll in private or shared lessons?
We support all your decision. Consider your/your child personality while making the decision, financial budget, and time. Thus said, all children/individual with special needs can only enroll in private lessons because we pride ourselves in addressing those special challenges by individualized lessons and attention.
What is the tuition rate/investment?
- Private lessons are $90/month (4 weeks) excluding materials.
- Shared/Group lessons are $60/month (4 weeks) excluding materials.
- There is $20 registration fee/year
- Materials (4 books, a CD and a DVD) generally cost $50 two-three times per year depending on the student’s progress.
- Additional enrichment materials are available ($10-$20 per book) but these are optional for students.
Are there discounts available?
Yes! A family discount is available for parents enrolling more than one member of the family, even themselves.
Does the student come alone?
Depends on the age and personality of the student. We recommend that parent stays in the lesson with the student for 2 reasons.
- So the parent can be directly involved in the student’s musical education, encourage and keep the student accountable.
- This program is designed to allow the attending parent to benefit from instruction as well (aka, YOU also learn to PLAY by observing and it’s FREE!
Do I need to practice outside of my lessons?
ABSOLUTELY! You can not learn to play piano by touching the keys only once a week! Our practice requirements varies between each students depending on their age, commitment, attention span, etc. Generally a good practice time is between 10 to 20 minutes, 5 or 6 days each week.
